House Oversight Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., blasted his counterparts in the Senate this weekend who declined to support the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act, questioning whether Republicans in the upper chamber are "that weak."

The House has passed the SAVE America Act three times so far and House Speaker Mike Johnson said he plans to pass the bill “one more time” in the lower chamber through a budget reconciliation bill.

Comer shared his frustrations with the Senate in an interview Sunday, claiming Senate Republicans who really are "weak" do not belong in the upper chamber.

“Are you that weak? That’s my question to any Republican senator — are you that weak?" Comer said during an appearance on Fox News’ “The Big Weekend Show.”  "To where if you vote for a valid ID to be shown to vote, you’re gonna get beat in your home state? I mean, if you’re that weak, you don’t need to be a United States senator."

The comment comes as Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-SD, claimed that Republicans do not have enough votes in his chamber to pass the bill and has resisted changes to Senate rules to pass the bill without the 60 votes needed to clear the filibuster.

“All that I’m hearing from the Senate leadership is that they don’t have the votes,” Comer said. “Not only do they not have 60 votes, they don’t have 50 votes — which I don’t believe that ... I hope that the Senate will get it together and figure out something that we can pass to give the American people confidence in the integrity of the elections."

The SAVE America Act is a nationwide voter ID bill that has strong support from the Trump-aligned conservative voter base. It requires people to present proof of citizenship to register to vote and requires Americans to show ID when voting.
