At least 164 people have died and another 971 were injured in two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening.

The earthquakes, which measured 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude, were the strongest earthquakes to hit the country in over a century, the Associated Press reported

The quakes could be felt as far away as Brazil's Amazon, over 1,000 miles from Venezuela's capital, Caracas.

Acting President Delcy Rodríguez said Thursday that authorities are trying to rescue people who are believed to be trapped inside the rubble of collapsed buildings. She urged businesses to make equipment available to aid in the response.
