Trump warns of the dangers of 'communism' after recent elections in NY

President Donald Trump warned American voters Friday about a supposed rise in "communism" after progressive candidates won recent elections in New York this week.
New York City's socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani scored a slew of victories on Tuesday night when a string of his candidates won their respective primaries for congressional districts, even beating out two incumbents.
Trump slammed the recent New York elections in comments at the Faith and Freedom Coalition Policy Conference in Washington, DC, stating the "communist" candidates want to "completely destroy the traditional American way of life."
"Communism is very easy to sell. It destroys everything, but it’s very easy. I’ll be honest, I think I’d be the greatest communist in history," Trump said. "I’d give free rent ... From now on, anybody who wants a house, don’t worry about it — just pick the house you want. Everybody gets free food. Everything is free from this point forward. Everyone’s going to vote for me.
"The problem is, after two or three years, the country is a disaster area. The country fails," he continued. "It always does. So easy to sell. That first year, boy, you’re the most popular. It’s happening right now in New York and California. But you’ll start living in squalor. There will be no food. There will be no housing ... There won’t be any law and order.
"This is what happens," he added. "For thousands of years it’s been happening, under different names."
The warning also comes after a New York City housing board on Thursday voted to freeze rent for approximately one million rent-controlled apartments for tenants with one-year or two-year leases for a period of two years.
Mamdani, who has vowed to enact socialist policies in the city including price controls and government-run grocery stores, had appointed six of the board's nine members since he took office.
