Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday warned Ukrainians to take shelter ahead of an expected Russian attack across the country.
Zelensky made the remarks during a press conference with the prime minister of Ireland and said he would return to his country Wednesday evening.
"Today, I ask our people in Ukraine to be especially careful – stay safe and protect your families and children – be sure to take shelter and pay attention to air-raid alerts in Ukraine," he said. "We know that Putin has been preparing a massive strike against Ukraine for some time. That is exactly the threat we are facing tonight."
The war has raged since 2022, with relatively little movement on the front line in the past few months. His warnings come, however, as fierce battles rage for strategic cities in the Ukrainian east, including Kupyansk, Lyman, and Kostiantynivka.
He did not elaborate on the nature of the attacks, though Russian forces have general used drones and missiles to target critical sites behind the front lines.
