Colorado Sen. Hickenlooper defeats progressive challenger in Democratic primary: AP
Hickenlooper's challenger, Julie Gonzales, identifies as a progressive Democratic candidate who supports priorities such as Medicare for all.
Incumbent Colorado Democratic Sen. John Hickenlooper, who is seeking a second term in the upper chamber, won his primary Tuesday night, defeating "progressive Democrat" state Sen. Julie Gonzales for the nomination.
Hickenlooper won the primary with 57% of the vote at the time of publishing, according to the Associated Press, and will face Republican nominee state Sen. Mark Baisley, who ran unopposed in his primary, in November.
The result reveals that the state itself is not fully prepared for socialist candidates like New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and his candidates because Gonzales identifies as a progressive candidate who supports priorities such as Medicare for all.
Gonzales has also called for raising the minimum wage, establishing renter protections, and imposing an arms embargo on Israel.
The results come after Mamdani's candidates managed to sweep their primaries in New York City last week, knocking off incumbent lawmakers. The media widely interpreted the results as evidence of Mamdani’s growing influence and the increasing appeal of socialist-oriented candidates.
