Democratic socialist Melat Kiros defeated incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette in a Colorado House primary on Tuesday.

Kiros, a first-time candidate, managed to win against a 30-year incumbent in the state's 1st Congressional District, which is centered on Denver, the Associated Press reported

Kiros is a progressive critic of "establishment Democrats." She supports Medicare for all, abolishing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, and universal childcare. Fellow democratic socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., has endorsed her campaign.

Her success in the deep blue district all but guarantees her election in November's general election.
