Rescue crews pull 33 people alive from collapsed buildings after Venezuela earthquakes, 50k missing
International rescue teams have joined Venezuelan emergency responders
Rescue crews pulled 33 people alive from collapsed buildings over the weekend as emergency teams continued searching for survivors after the powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela earlier this week, officials said. Despite those rescues, tens of thousands of people were still listed as missing as hopes of finding more survivors began to fade.
The official death toll climbed above 1,400 on Saturday following the back-to-back magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes that devastated large sections of the coastal state of La Guaira and surrounding areas. Thousands more were injured, and authorities said many residents remain displaced.
Around 50,000 people are reportedly still missing.
International rescue teams have reportedly joined Venezuelan emergency responders, bringing search dogs, specialized equipment and personnel to help comb through collapsed buildings.
Rescue operations have been complicated by damaged infrastructure and limited access to some of the hardest-hit communities.
